Ilhan Omar – U.S. House Representative for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District

Nothing short of divine, Rep. Ilhan Omar is an inspiring and remarkable woman who fully embraces and embodies the struggle of our spirit and resilience. Her journey to becoming the brave, beautiful, and intelligent lioness she is began in Somalia.
Having experienced the hardships of civil war, she immigrated to the United States as a refugee, eventually becoming a citizen. She then went on to become the first refugee, the first Somali-American, and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, proudly representing the 5th Congressional District in Minnesota.

Throughout her time in Congress, Rep. Omar has fiercely advocated for progressive ideas, including affordable housing, healthcare reform, criminal justice reform, and universal free school lunch for children. She remains a bold and constant critic of outdated, elitist, and unjust policies and laws, particularly those targeting immigrants, refugees, and people of color.

Rep. Omar’s commitment to justice and equity is evident in her support for increasing educational and economic opportunities for all people. She has been a champion for the rights of women and marginalized communities. She has spoken out against Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry while being a target of it herself.

Full of grace, Rep. Omar is a true trailblazer and leader whose energetic spirit persists in facing every obstacle the status quo throws at her to achieve success and positively impact this world for Black women and everyone else. Rep. Omar gladly shoulders the same burden of fending for justice that the ancestors bore, with the same magnetism and fire she was born within her bones. Her courage, resilience, and determination inspire Black women and others everywhere, and her work continues to shape the future of our politics and society.
