A Georgia native, voting rights and democracy have always been top of mind for Ms. Butler. She has registered countless Black Georgians to vote and trained hundreds more to do the same. Many of the young people with whom she works draw tremendous inspiration from Ms. Butler.
Helen Butler is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, serving as a charter member of her chapter. She attends Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and helped to conceive of the “Souls to the Polls” voter mobilization effort.
“I just became addicted to this work…I care. And there are other people that care about you and about us together. And if we’re in this together, we can make that difference. We’ve done it since the days we got here from our motherland, right? We stuck together and we survived and persevered and we can still do that.”
Helen Butler is, indeed, a divine Black woman.

Honoring Assata Olugbala Shakur
The United States government cornered her, framed her, caged her, made her a fugitive, then

our grandfathers.

Trump’s Racist Police Occupation of Black Cities: The People Must Fight Back
The occupation of Washington, DC by militarized troops at the behest of a racist, fascist Trump regime is the full-on declaration of war on Black people in America. While some “Black faces in high places” are complicit, becoming proxies for the colonizer, it is ultimately the power of the people that will defeat the oppressor. In DC, this is the long-held work of the #FreeDC movement and Black Washingtonians who have always resisted, never submitting to their own oppression.
